Encourage your Employees to Upgrade their Skilled Trades Licenses

Are you the owner or manager of a skilled trades shop, an HVAC or Gas Technician business, for example? If so, I am confident that you are already hiring licensed skilled trades professionals to ensure your business is successful. But that said, even when your employees have their Gas Technician license, there are a number of levels of qualification, as you know. Are you hiring graduates of a G3 program? G2 licensees? Do you have any licensed G1 gas fitters on staff?

Encouraging your staff to continue their education in the industry and upgrade their certifications is essential for the success of your business. You may require your G3 gas fitters to upgrade to their G2 certificate, or you may want to see your employees complete their G1 for an opportunity to develop their skills toward long-term career goals that will promote their job satisfaction and increase their skills in the field.

Training for a second career can be daunting. First, there is the fact that you have to go back to school, which is terrifying in itself after being in the working world for so long. Then there is the time commitment, deciding which career is best for you and, of course, cost.

The cost of second career training in the skilled trades can be the ultimate deciding factor for many. Despite the prospective wage that waits for you upon completion of your skilled trades education, the upfront investment is high, we get that. Luckily there are funding programs available for adult education courses, it's just a matter of being aware of them and applying.

 

Second Career Funding

The Second Career Funding strategy is run by the Ontario Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities. The program pays for the training or education residents of Ontario need to get a better job. It provides financial assistance up to $28,000, or more in some cases.
