At The Skilled Trades Academies, we have many students come into our classrooms to learn the tricks of the trade and become licensed gas technicians. We are proud of each and every one of them and love when we get the opportunity to catch up with a graduate and learn what they're up to now.
We caught up with graduates Austin McMullen who now works at Montgomery Gas to hear about his experience.
Austin McMullen, a Skilled Trades Academy graduate and Montgomery Gas employee, shares his experience and advice for incoming students:
What made you decide to pursue a career in the skilled trades? Why as a gas technician specifically?
It started as my grade 12 co-op in high school, and I ended up really enjoying the trade. I chose gas specifically because it was like the entry-level ticket into the HVAC trade. Without it, you are very limited.
Why did you decide to go to the Skilled Trades Academy?
The reason I chose The Skilled Trades Academy is because I had a few friends prior to me that went there with great success.
What were some of the benefits of attending The Skilled Trades Academy?
The biggest benefit for me was that within 6 months of attending the program I could be back in the field working as a licensed G2 gas technician.
How long did it take to find a job after you completed your license?
Zero time at all as my employer sent me to school, as soon I was done school the following week I was working.
How did your training prepare you for working in the industry?
The training was great for the industry. Learning the codes, different equipment etc.
What do you love about working in the trades/gas industry?
My favourite thing about the industry is that it’s always something different either every week or every day, there’s so much work in so many different areas of the trade. It’s endless the paths you can take.
What are your career goals?
Career goal is to own my own business in the trade
What advice do you have for people who are considering a career in the trades?
The best advice I could give to anyone looking to get into the trade is two things. First off, never stop learning and evolving with the trade, every day is a chance to learn something new or get better at what you are currently doing. The second is to be patient. The first couple years are difficult and can be discouraging only because you're still new in the trade, once you gain some experience it only gets better and better after that sky’s the limit.
What advice do you have for people who are considering attending the Skilled Trades Academy?
For people attending Skilled Trades Academy, pay attention, do your homework, ask questions, and take it seriously.
