The statistics seem bleak — the unemployment rate among young people in Canada is nearly double the national numbers. But there are opportunities out there, you just have to look in the right place. That's why the chef executive officer of Linamar, a Canadian auto parts maker, is urging young people to consider a skilled trades career in Canada.

Opportunities galore

You must be tired of hearing us say this, but the number of skilled trades jobs in Ontario and the rest of the country is growing. On top of that, there aren't enough people looking for jobs in the skilled trades in Canada to meet the national need. So, when you decide to get an education in the skilled trades in Ontario, you are opening doors to many opportunities across the country — you and your new skills will be in high demand.

Room to grow

Because certified trades people are so valuable across the nation — they are the backbone of many businesses in Canada — there is room to grow. Linamar CEO Linda Hasenfratz told BNN that more than half of their general managers who run their facilities have a background in the skilled trades. These large scale manufacturers see that understanding the technology is essential in running their business successfully.

Great pay

When you see the unemployment rate for youth (aged 15 to 24) in Canada at 13% compared to the national unemployment rate of 6.6%, it's easy to get disenchanted. However, a job in the skilled trades is not only available, but it will pay well. In fact, Linamar has openly stated that the company pays its skilled tradespeople $83,000 a year on average with some even making into six figures. You may have to pay your dues and work your way up, but the value of a skilled trades career in Ontario is pretty obvious if you ask us.
