The difference between a job and a career may be hard to define. Usually, a job is a means to an end, something you are doing for now, but is not your passion or something you see yourself doing for the entirety of your working life. A career is something you build over timed by getting the right education and experience. When you pursue a career in the skilled trades, that is exactly what you are doing — combining hands-on technical training with an ongoing learning experience in the industry to build a skill set that to grow a career.

When you decide to get a skilled trades certification — like a gas technicians license, for example — you are deciding to build a foundation for a lifelong rewarding career with what will seem like endless possibilities. Once you are certified, you can take your license and continue your training into another trade or an apprenticeship, open your own business, become an educator in your field, and and and!

People who end up working in the trades did not end up there by default — they chose a challenging and rewarding career that they love.

The numbers don't lie

A few years ago, a number of employers were surveyed about their satisfaction with the skills of their certified skilled trades workers. 92% of these employers were satisfied with the performance and skill set of their employees.

As well, 96% of licensed skilled trades workers were employed and 94% of those employed were working in the trade in which they originally trained. And when asked if they would choose the same path, 96% said they absolutely would!

The best way to learn is by doing — that's why even after full training at a private career college, working in your industry is the best practice and classroom you could ask for. Working side by side with experienced trades people will help you to grow you skills and become even better at what you do.

When you complete your gas technician course in Ontario (or any other skilled trades option), you simply write an exam and upon passing you are on your way to a great career! With your license, you are more employable, earn higher wages and have proof that you meet Ontario's high skilled trades standards.
