This isn't the first time I've brought it up, and I doubt it will be the last — there is a skilled trades talent shortage in Canada. In a recent ManpowerGroup survey, 32% of hiring managers in Canada and the U.S. said they are having a hard time finding licensed skilled trades workers to fill their positions, making 2015 the fourth consecutive year that saw a scarcity in skilled trades workers.

What this means for the Canadian Economy

It goes without saying that without licensed skilled trades workers available to fill the positions being offered, maintaining proficient staffing levels is becoming near impossible for skilled trades employers in Canada. The ManpowerGroup surveyed 14,000 hiring managers and found the following stats regarding the impact of the skilled trades shortage on Canadian businesses:

  • 39% of businesses have a reduced ability to service clients
  • 37% are seeing reduced competitiveness and productivity
  • 30% have an increased employee turnover
  • 25% have higher compensation costs
  • 23% are facing lower employee engagement and morale
  • 18% see reduced innovation and creativity in the workplace

What does this mean for you?

If you are considering a skilled trades career in Ontario, now is the time to complete skilled trades training. By getting trained at a private career college versus traditional college, you will be licensed in weeks and be prepared to move quickly when you see a job opportunity.

And because this skilled trades shortage is affecting businesses across the country, if you have ever dreamed of relocating, there are jobs available nationwide. In fact, companies with hard-to-fill positions will often offer relocation policies to help with your move.

Of course, given the current market conditions, compensation and benefits for many skilled trades jobs in Canada is very competitive. Not only will you spend less time in the classroom getting trained, but when you begin working, you will be making a salary that makes the investment in your education completely worth it!
